The Qatar national football team retained its 53rd place in the latest FIFA world rankings released on Thursday. With 1,453.65 points, the two-time Asian champions are fifth in the Arab and Asian regions. Under Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui, Qatar played two friendlies in August – a 2-2 draw with Bahrain and a 1-4 defeat to Russia.
The matches were part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Qatar, currently fourth in Group A with 13 points from 10 matches, will face Oman on October 8 and the UAE in Doha on October 14. Iran leads the group with 23 points, followed by Uzbekistan (21) and the UAE (15).
In the global rankings, Spain returned to first place for the first time since 2014. France remained in second place and Argentina dropped to third place, while Germany fell out of the top 10 to 12th place after a defeat to Slovakia. The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by Canada, Mexico and the USA.
