The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has announced that Qatar has officially applied to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
QOC President Sheikh John bin Hamad Al Thani said that Qatar already has 95% of the sports facilities it needs and is working to complete the rest. Qatar will leverage its experience of hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Asian Cup to support its bid.
Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said the move demonstrates Qatar’s leading role in world sports. Qatar hopes to become the first Middle Eastern country to host the Olympics. He added that Qatar has proven that it can provide a safe and enjoyable sporting experience for fans around the world.
Other countries such as India, Indonesia, Turkey and Chile have also submitted bids. Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Egypt, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Denmark and Canada have also expressed interest. Qatar’s capital, Doha, will host the 2030 Asian Games and the country plans to use the same facilities for the 2036 Olympics.
