Qatar has begun construction of the world’s two largest 3D printed schools. UCC Holding, working with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), has begun the printing phase of the project, the largest of its kind globally.
The project includes 14 public schools, two of which will be built using 3D printing. Both schools will cover an area of 20,000 square meters. This is 40 times larger than any 3D printed building ever built. The schools will have two floors and will be built on plots measuring 100 x 100 meters.
UCC Holding has partnered with COBOD, a Danish company known for its 3D construction printing. They have provided two giant BODXL printers, the size of a Boeing 737 hangar. These printers are the largest in the world.
Before printing began, the team spent months preparing and testing concrete mixes, training staff, and performing full-size test prints. Printing is done at night to beat the heat of Qatar, reduce dust and noise, and improve the quality of the concrete. The buildings will have smooth, flowing walls inspired by desert sand dunes.
The project will help reduce waste, reduce carbon emissions, and speed up construction. The schools are expected to be ready by the end of 2025, demonstrating Qatar’s growing role as a leader in sustainable and innovative construction.
