The Katara Cultural Village Foundation is strengthening its position as a hub for international cultural exchange by inaugurating the Russian Corner in front of the Al Thuraya Planetarium (Building 41). The new statue was officially unveiled by Katara’s General Manager, Prof. Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al-Sulaiti, in the presence of the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Qatar, Dmitry Dugadkin, and a host of diplomats, artists and distinguished guests.
At the heart of the Russian Corner is a striking bronze statue of Yuri Gagarin, the legendary Soviet cosmonaut who made history by becoming the first human to travel into space in 1961. Created by renowned Russian artist Alexei Leonov, the sculpture serves as a powerful and enduring symbol of scientific achievement and human discovery.
The statue was presented to Katara by the international charitable foundation Dialogue of Cultures – One World 2025 in collaboration with the Russian Embassy in Qatar. The initiative celebrates the deep cultural and historical ties between Russia and Qatar, and reflects the commitment to promoting mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of the two countries.
“The Russian Corner adds a deep cultural and humanitarian layer to Katara’s artistic landscape. This space symbolizes not only a historic moment in human history, but also the values that unite diverse nations,” said Prof. Dr. Al-Sulaiti at the ceremony.
The addition of the Russian Corner adds to Katara’s growing collection of international artworks. Existing cultural spaces within the village include the Spanish, Turkish, Filipino, Ecuadorian and Georgian Corners – each developed in close collaboration with the respective embassies. These unique spaces reflect Katara’s vision to serve as a cultural bridge connecting people from different backgrounds through heritage, art and storytelling.
“This statue of Yuri Gagarin is not just a monument – it is a symbol of friendship between Russia and Qatar. It represents our belief in dialogue, peace and cultural cooperation,” said Russian Ambassador Dugadkin.
Katara’s commitment to showcasing diverse cultures through public artworks aligns with its broader mission to foster dialogue between civilizations. With each new addition, the Cultural Village continues to offer a richer and more inclusive experience, inviting people to enjoy the beauty of global traditions in a uniquely Qatari context.
As Katara becomes an increasingly vibrant hub of art, science, and cultural exchange, the Russian Corner stands as a proud reminder of the milestones of humanity and the enduring connections that can be forged through cultural diplomacy.
