Qatar Museums, in collaboration with the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), has opened a new art exhibition titled Latinoamericano at the Qatar National Museum. It is the first major exhibition in the WANA (West Asia and North Africa) region to focus on modern and contemporary art from Latin America. It will be open to the public from April 21 to July 19, 2025. The exhibition is part of the Qatar-Argentina and Chile 2025 Year of Culture, a national program that helps foster cultural ties between Qatar and other countries.
Latinoamericano features nearly 170 works of art by more than 100 artists from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The works show how Latin American artists have used their creativity to speak to life, culture, politics, and social change from the early 1900s to the present day. The exhibition is divided into six sections with different themes: Identity, Memory, Cities, and Resistance. The show is curated by Issa Al-Shirawi of Qatar Museums and María Amalia Garcia of Malba.
Visitors will be able to see famous works of art such as Frida Kahlo’s Self-Portrait with Monkey and Parrot, Diego Rivera’s Dance in Tehuantepec, Fernando Botero’s The Widower, and Wifredo Lam’s Omi Obini. These are displayed alongside lesser-known and new works, including some that are being shown to the public for the first time.
As part of the exhibition, there is also an outdoor installation called Sculpture of Dreams by Marta Minujín. It is a fun, large, inflatable artwork that was first exhibited in Times Square in New York. It adds a fun and imaginative touch to the experience.
Overall, Latin Americano invites visitors to Qatar and the wider region to learn more about the rich and diverse artistic history of Latin America. It is a great opportunity to see powerful and creative works that are rarely exhibited in this part of the world.
