HMC launches first frozen packaged red blood cell service in Qatar

The Transfusion Medicine Division of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) announced the launch of the first frozen packed red blood cell (PRBC) service in Qatar. With this, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has created a new history in Qatar. For the first time in Qatar, a facility has been set up to store and use frozen blood. This is a very promising thing for people with rare blood groups.

What is frozen blood?

Frozen blood removes the liquid part of the plasma from the blood and keeps the remaining part cold. It can be safely stored for a long time.

This system will be of great benefit to people with rare blood groups, those with rare antibodies and blood groups like O-negative blood, which is needed in emergency situations.

This service was launched by the Transfusion Medicine Laboratory team of their institution that includes Dr. Sara Adel Salim, Head of Transfusion Medicine; Dr. Aysha Ibrahim Al Malki, Executive Director and Head of Hemovigilance; and Dr. Saloua Al Himissi, Head of Qatar National Blood Donation Center.
