Car accidents on the rise in Qatar’s desert: Study

A new study reveals a worrying increase in car accidents in the desert areas of Qatar. Most accidents occur between October and March.

The study, published in the Qatar Medical Journal, looked at car accidents in the desert in Qatar. The main findings of the report include off-road driving and its associated hazards. Most of the accidents were caused by SUVs and ATVs.

Ignoring safety measures such as not wearing a seatbelt, driving too fast, and not adapting to challenges in an area such as a desert are some of the major causes of accidents. Most accidents occur between 4pm and 8pm. Many accidents have been caused by unknown drivers engaging in risky activities such as dune bashing.

The highest risk is for people under the age of 40. In 35.6 per cent of cases, permanent orthopaedic injuries were reported. The fatality rate is at 1.6%.

The study says that an approach to the environment and safety thinking should be considered important during desert trips. The study also points to timely medical care and precautions.
