Today is Qatar’s National Day. A number of art, cultural events and celebrations will be held in different parts of Qatar from today, highlighting the country’s tradition, culture and rise. Since two days have been declared as a public holiday as part of the National Day, the people of the country will also get a lot of time to spend with their families during this time.
Since 2007, December 18 is celebrated as National Day every year to commemorate the unification of the country. From that day, the National Day has been celebrated under the decree of the then Crown Prince and Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Qatar started celebrating Qatar National Day (QND) on December 18 every year after Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani became the ruler of Qatar.
The history of Qatar
The Gulf nation gained independence from the British on September 3, 1971. But December 18 is celebrated as National Day on the anniversary of getting the identity of the country of Qatar.
Qatar was founded by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who was successful in uniting his country in 1878.
Mohammed bin Thani, his father, was succeeded by Sheikh Jassim on December 18. Under his leadership, he brought all of the peninsula’s indigenous tribes together to defend the nation against foreign invaders like the British, Ottomans, and other tribes from the Arabian Peninsula. He was the leader who brought Qatar together and achieved independence.
A parade is held annually to commemorate Qatar’s National Day. This time, the parade has been called off, but there are still celebrations going on across the nation. Both residents and people from other states celebrate this day.
