Qatar Begins Construction of the World’s Largest Blue Ammonia Plant

On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the foundation stone for a blue ammonia plant project was laid at Mesaieed Industrial City. Qatar’s Deputy Emir, Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, inaugurated the construction, which is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2026. The facility aims to produce up to 1.3 million tons of blue ammonia annually.

The groundbreaking ceremony at Mesaieed Industrial City was attended by Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of Energy Affairs, alongside other government dignitaries, CEOs from associated organizations, and senior officials from QatarEnergy.

Blue ammonia, a critical component in producing urea fertilizers, plays a vital role in isolating ammonia. The project aligns with Qatar’s goal of doubling urea exports by 2030. The initiative was first announced in September.
