Qatar has made significant progress in establishing a comprehensive Gene Bank containing 5 million seeds from various food crops, including tomatoes, beans, and sweet corn, to enhance the nation’s food security system, a senior official stated.
Hamad Saket Al Shammari, Director of the Agricultural Research Department, highlighted that the seeds of different food crops are stored in the Qatar Gene Bank at a temperature of minus 80 degrees Celsius, ensuring their longevity.
The Qatar Gene Bank currently holds 1,038 seed accessions, comprising a diverse range of food and agricultural crops, including those with reproductive capabilities. Speaking in a recent interview with Qatar TV, Al Shammari emphasized that the initiative aims to extend the cultivation period for these crops.
